What Is GMRS
Never Touched a Radio Before? Here's the Simple Version.
If the idea of “getting licensed for radio” sounds complicated or intimidating, take a breath. GMRS was built for exactly this. It’s not ham radio. There’s no exam, no technical knowledge required, and nothing to memorize. You fill out a short form, pay a small fee, and your entire household is covered under one license, including your kids. No one else in the family needs to apply separately.
Thousands of people who have never owned a radio in their life go through this exact process every year. If you can fill out an online form, you can do this.
What You'll Need Before You Start
Nothing to Worry About, Just Gather These First
- A valid government photo ID
- About 15 to 20 minutes of quiet time
- An email address you check regularly
- A credit or debit card for the $35 FCC application fee
That's genuinely it. You are not missing anything else.
The Step by Step Guide
We'll Walk You Through Every Screen, One at a Time
This is the part that trips people up, not because it’s hard, but because government websites can feel confusing if you’ve never used one. That’s why every single step below shows you exactly what your screen should look like, so you’re never left guessing or wondering if you did something wrong.
Quick Links (also referenced in the steps below):
Step 1: Create Your FCC Username
This is just an account, the same as signing up for any website. It can feel official because it’s a government site, but it’s really no different from creating an account for a store or an app.
Click Create Account
Step 2: Start a New GMRS Application
Once you have created your account (step 1) and logged in, you’ll head over to the FCC’s licensing system, called ULS. The name sounds technical, but all you need is to follow these clicks:
Click Apply For A New License
Select "ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS)" From the Dropdown
Select "ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS)" From the Dropdown
Step 3: Enter Your Information
This step just asks for your legal name (as it appears on your license), address, and contact details, the kind of information you’ve filled out a hundred times before. It will also ask you a few questions, fill them out and click next.
Step 5: Review Your Application
Before submitting, you’ll see a summary of everything you entered. This is your chance to slow down and glance it over.
Take an extra minute here. Once you submit, changes are much harder to make.
Select "ZA - General Mobile Radio (GMRS)" From the Dropdown

Step 6: Pay the Application Fee
The current FCC fee is $35 and it covers your entire family for 10 years. This is the only cost involved. This is a one time payment, not a subscription or recurring charge.
Step 7: Get Your License
After approval, which is often the same day but can occasionally take longer, you’ll receive your license and a callsign. Think of the callsign as your family’s name on the radio, it’s simply how you identify yourselves when you talk.
